Inspired by my sister, this painting began as a simple sketch. The sketch idea was to add elements to her portrait that uniquely portray her character. She's always wearing black, so I knew before painting that the portrait was going to be black and white. When I began sketching her face, her hair became wings. She has several bird tatoos, so it came to mind easily. I chose a raven to adorn her crown to symbolize her free spirit. The beautiful lace top was simply what she was wearing and it was perfect. Delicate, yet strong and resilient like Sheana. She's always loved the outdoors, so I portrayed them close to her heart. The forest is winter, bare and surviving despite harsh conditions. Within the dark, bare bark branches, there is a force of life that will flourish under the right conditions. The background was created with drips, splashes and various techniques to create chaos surrounding her. The space she exists in is constantly effecting her. The drips flow from around the edges...
